Is Artificial Intelligence a Threat to Humanity?

Jaan Tallinn, renowned tech innovator and co-creator of groundbreaking platforms like Skype and Kazaa, warns that artificial intelligence could present a serious threat to human existence.

Tallinn, who has long been at the forefront of transformative technology, helped develop Kazaa – a platform that revolutionized access to music and movies – and Skype, which changed how we communicate across the globe through video and voice calls. Yet, despite his contributions to innovation, he now expresses deep concern about AI’s rapid advancement.

He is particularly troubled by how major technology companies and state institutions are accelerating AI development. Could we soon reach a stage where machines operate entirely independently, without requiring human involvement?

In a conversation with host Steve Clemons, Tallinn – who also established the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge – explores both the dangers and potential benefits that artificial intelligence brings to our world.
