Jaron Lanier: AI Isn’t a Threat to Humanity

The creator of the term “virtual reality” believes AI is harmless—and trying to resist tech progress is pointless.

What if the alarm surrounding artificial intelligence is overblown? Could it be that AI is simply a remix of the vast content already available online? And is the idea that machines might one day create other machines—rendering humans obsolete—completely unfounded?

Earlier this month, host Steve Clemons interviewed Jaan Tallinn, a computer scientist who sees AI as a potential existential danger to human existence.

This week, Clemons sits down with a very different voice—computer scientist Jaron Lanier—who reassures that AI poses no such danger. Lanier believes society has been influenced by sci-fi narratives that warn of sentient machines, but in reality, those fears are unfounded.
