Tech company to unveil unique AI personas, including a historical icon and a travel-savvy surfer.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is working on a new series of AI chatbots designed with distinct personalities—one modeled after Abraham Lincoln, according to a report by the Financial Times.
The report, citing a source close to the project, claims the company could launch these chatbots as early as next month. One version will take on the persona of the former U.S. president, while another, a laid-back surfer, will provide travel advice.
In a competitive race with companies like Apple and Microsoft, Meta is investing heavily in artificial intelligence. Just last month, it made headlines by releasing the source code for its AI language model, Llama 2, for public use. CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that open-source AI is both safer and more transparent.
These AI developments come at a time when Meta is grappling with declining user engagement on Threads, its Twitter-like app that saw high initial signups but quickly lost over half of its users.
The company has yet to officially comment on the chatbot project. Despite recent struggles, Meta recently posted strong advertising revenue growth, following a challenging year that included over 21,000 layoffs.
Other tech firms have also introduced AI chatbots with distinctive characters—such as Character.AI, backed by Andreessen Horowitz, which offers personas ranging from Elon Musk to video game characters like Mario.
